Association between fish and shellfish consumption, n-3polyunsaturated fatty acids, and gastric cancer risk: the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study.

Fish and shellfish consumption is suggested to be a cancer-protective factor. However, studies investigating this association for gastric cancer, especially considering Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and atrophic gastritis (AG), are limited. We investigated gastric cancer risk associated with fish, shellfish, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs)consumption among Japanese adults. 90,504 subjects enrolled in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study(JPHC Study) were followed until December 2013. Dietary intake data were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) werecalculated for gastric cancer risk associated with fish and shellfishconsumption and marine n-3 PUFAs (sum of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) using Cox proportional hazards models. Among those with avaliable data, we conducted a subgroup analysis takingH. pylori infectionand AGstatusinto consideration. There were 2,701 gastric cancer cases during an average of 15years of follow-up. We observed an increased gastric cancer risk for salted fish consumption for men [HR for fifth quintile versus first quintile 1.43 (95% CI 1.18-1.75)] and for women [HR 1.33 (95% CI 1.00-1.77)]. We observed a weak risk reduction trend for women as the intake ofmarine n-3 PUFAs increased (p-trend:0.07). When we included H. pylori infection and atrophic gastritis status in the analysis, the associations diminished. Our results suggest that salted fish increases gastric cancer risk for men and women, while marine n-3 PUFAs marginally decreases this risk among women in Japan.

Global acetylome profiling indicates EPA impedes but OA promotes prostate cancer motility through altered acetylation of PFN1 and FLNA.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the leading causes of cancer morbidity and mortality in men. Metastasis is the main cause of PCa-associated death. Recent evidence indicated a significant reduction in PCa mortality associated with higher ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) consumption. However, the underlying mechanisms remained elusive. In this study, we applied global acetylome profiling to study the effect of fatty acids treatment. Results indicated that oleic acid (OA, monounsaturated fatty acid, MUFA, 100 µM) elevates while EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid, 100 µM) reduces the acetyl-CoA level, which alters the global acetylome. After treatment, two crucial cell motility regulators, PFN1 and FLNA, were found with altered acetylation levels. OA increased the acetylation of PFN1 and FLNA, whereas EPA decreased PFN1 acetylation level. Furthermore, OA promotes while EPA inhibits PCa migration and invasion. Immunofluorescence assay indicated that EPA impedes the formation of lamellipodia or filopodia through reduced localization of PFN1 and FLNA to the leading edge of cells. Therefore, perturbed acetylome may be one critical step in fatty acid-affected cancer cell motility. This study provides some new insights into the response of ω-3 PUFAs treatment and a better understanding of cancer cell migration and invasion modulation.

Dietary composition and its association with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease among Chinese adults: A cross-sectional study

Background and study aimsMetabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has become the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. Diet plays a critical role in the prevention and treatment of MAFLD. Our hypothesis was that the intake of some macronutrients, vitamins, or mineral elements is associated with MAFLD. Patients and methodsPatients with MAFLD can be diagnosed based on the evidence of hepatic steatosis and if they meet any of the three additional criteria of overweight/obesity, diabetes mellitus, or metabolic dysregulation. Diets were recorded using photographs and diaries of meals for seven consecutive days. The consumed dietary composition was compared with the recommended intake according to the China Food Composition Tables (Standard Edition) version 2019 and the Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes version 2013, and its association with MAFLD was assessed by logistical regression analyses. ResultsA total of 229 MAFLD patients and 148 healthy controls were included in this study. MAFLD patients, compared with that by non-MAFLD participants, consumed more polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (p < 0.001), vitamin E (p < 0.001), and iron (p = 0.008). The intake of PUFAs (OR = 1.070, 95 % CI: 1.017–1.127, p = 0.009) and vitamin E (OR = 1.100, 95 % CI: 1.018–1.190, p = 0.016) was positively associated with MAFLD. In addition, the percentages of individuals who consumed PUFAs (p = 0.006), vitamin E (p < 0.001), or iron (p = 0.046) above the recommended intake were higher among the individuals with MAFLD. Daily intake of PUFAs > 11 % (OR = 2.328, 95 % CI: 1.290–4.201, p = 0.005) and vitamin E > 14 mg (OR = 2.189, 95 % CI: 1.153–4.158, p = 0.017) was positively correlated with MAFLD. ConclusionsPatients with MAFLD consumed more PUFAs, vitamin E, and iron in their daily diet. Excessive consumption of PUFAs and vitamin E might be independent risk factors for the incidence of MAFLD.

Association between n-3 PUFA and lung function: results from the NHANES 2007-2012 and Mendelian randomisation study.

This study aimed to investigate the association between n-3 PUFA and lung function. First, a cross-sectional study was conducted based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2012 data. n-3 PUFA intake was obtained from 24-h dietary recalls. A multivariable linear regression model was used to assess the observational associations of n-3 PUFA intake with lung function. Subsequently, a two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) was performed to estimate the potential causal effect of n-3 PUFA on lung function. Genetic instrumental variables were extracted from published genome-wide association studies. Summary statistics about n-3 PUFA was from UK Biobank. Inverse variance weighted was the primary analysis approach. The observational study did not demonstrate a significant association between n-3 PUFA intake and most lung function measures; however, a notable exception was observed with significant findings in the highest quartile for forced vital capacity (FVC) and % predicted FVC. The MR results also showed no causal effect of circulating n-3 PUFA concentration on lung function (forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), β = 0·01301, se = 0·01932, P = 0·5006; FVC, β = -0·001894, se = 0·01704, P = 0·9115; FEV1:FVC, β = 0·03118, se = 0·01743, P = 0·07359). These findings indicate the need for further investigation into the impact of higher n-3 PUFA consumption on lung health.

P050 Paneth cell retinoid X receptor alpha drives metabolic gut inflammation

Abstract Background The rising incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases throughout the western world could be partially explained by changes in dietary behaviour such as an increased consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). In previous projects we demonstrated that PUFA induce a Crohn’s disease (CD) like gut inflammation in mice lacking antioxidant GPX4 in their intestinal epithelial cells. Cellular stress within Paneth cells has been shown to drive enteritis in mice. In this project we investigated the role of the PUFA receptor and transcription factor RXRα as driver of PUFA induced metabolic gut inflammation. Methods We generated mice lacking GPX4 (GPX4ΔPC) and GPX4 as well as RXRα (GPX4/RXRαΔPC) specifically in Paneth cells and fed them and littermate controls a Western-style diet enriched with PUFA (PUFA-WD). Mice were treated with 9-cis retinoic acid, HX531 or a neutralizing CXCL1 antibody. MODE-K cells (murine IECs) were stimulated with PUFA and were analysed by biochemical methods including ELISA, qPCR, ChIP and RNA sequencing for mechanistical workup in vitro. Results When stimulated with PUFA, GPX4 deficient IECs showed an increased activation of RXRα as well as an increased transcription and production of neutrophil attracting chemokine CXCL1, the murine homologue of IL-8. This could be attenuated by ablation of RXRα or treatment with HX531, an RXRα antagonist. By using ChIP we can demonstrate that RXRα is directly binding to the promoter region of CXCL1 upon PUFA stimulation, thereby regulating its transcription. GPX4ΔPC mice develop a CD like enteritis with mucosal to submucosal infiltration of neutrophils, macrophages, B and T cells. GPX4/RXRαΔPC mice were protected from PUFA induced enteritis and gut inflammation could be significantly ameliorated by treatment of GPX4ΔPC mice with RXRα antagonist HX531 or a neutralizing CXCL1 antibody after a PUFA-WD challenge. Moreover 9-cis retinoic acid treatment dose dependently blunted CXCL1 response and attenuated PUFA induced intestinal inflammation in GPX4ΔPC mice, thus indicating a competitive binding of PUFA to RXRα. Conclusion Our findings reveal, that PUFA binding to RXRα within Paneth cells regulates the transcription of cytokines and is crucially involved in the development of diet induced metabolic gut inflammation. Future studies are now warranted to prove if RXRα could be a promising new druggable target in human CD patients.

Association of Higher N-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Consumption and Aerobic Exercise with Lower Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio: Implications of Anti-Atherosclerotic Effect of Fish Consumption.

N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), abundant in oily fish, exert anti-inflammatory cardiovascular protective effects. We aimed to investigate the association between fish-derived n-3 PUFAs, lifestyle habits, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), an atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) marker. This cross-sectional study included 6,950 participants with no history of ASCVD, who underwent annual health check-ups (average age, 46.3 ± 13.0 years; male:female ratio, 58.8%) between April 2019 and March 2020 at the Health Planning Center, Nihon University Hospital. We calculated n-3 PUFA consumption using a questionnaire and the Japan National Health and Nutrition Survey. The average fish consumption frequency and fish-derived n-3 PUFA consumption were 2.20 ± 1.28 days/week and 5.20 ± 3.11 g/week, respectively. A higher fish-derived n-3 PUFA consumption was associated with a lower NLR. Multiple-stepwise regression analysis revealed that higher fish-derived n-3 PUFA consumption and more aerobic exercise habits were significant independent determinants of lower NLR. Furthermore, higher fish-derived n-3 PUFA consumption was associated with habitual aerobic exercise habits. Thus, higher fish-derived n-3 PUFA consumption and more aerobic exercise habits may be synergistically associated with lower NLR. This association may explain the preventive effects of fish consumption on the ASCVD risk.

Ambivalence towards pork belly: exploring its significance and contradictions from the perspectives of the food industry and nutritional science.

Pork is the most consumed meat in South Korea, and pork belly is the preferred cut. However, pork production cannot meet the demand, leading to a heavy reliance on imports, particularly for pork bellies. In contrast, low-fat cuts face oversupply problems owing to low demand and export challenges. Pork belly fat content varies with breed, sex, growth rate, and fatty acid composition. Western countries favor higher fat saturation for processed products, whereas South Koreans prefer grilled or roasted bellies. Excessive consumption of high-fat pork cuts like pork belly, which is rich in saturated fatty acids, can increase the risk of severe diseases, highlighting the importance of reducing saturated fat intake and increasing the consumption of monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids to mitigate these risks. The pork industry and public health sector should diversify production, promote leaner pork, and raise awareness about the implications of excessive pork consumption.

Dietary consumption of lipids as a potential risk factor for non-communicable diseases in Western Siberia

Aim. To assess the profile of lipid consumption in the population of Omsk Region, located in Western Siberia.Materials and Methods. During 2019-2020, we have performed a cross-sectional survey in the adult population of the Omsk region (n = 441, age 18-83 years). Questionnaires included an information regarding the food intake, nutritional status, and health status. In addition, we measured body mass index, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio. Among the parameters, we evaluated average daily consumption of energy, fats, cholesterol, saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, phospholipids, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid. In addition, we assessed the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet, specific weight of vegetable fats, and the energy quotas of individual nutrients.Results. In the population of Western Siberia, we found insufficient intake of alpha-linolenic acid (69.6 ± 2.2% population), arachidonic acid (55.3 ± 2.4%), polyunsaturated fatty acids (44.4 ± 2.4%), and phospholipids (37.6 ± 2.3%), as well as excessive consumption of cholesterol (74.1 ± 2.1%), total fats (61.9 ± 2.3%), saturated fatty acids (47.8 ± 2.4%), monounsaturated fatty acids (37.6 ± 2.3%), energy (34.7 ± 2.1%), and linoleic acid (31.1 ± 2.2%). In all groups of respondents, we registered high values of the omega-6/omega-3 ratio. The proportion of respondents with adequate consumption of energy and nutrients did not exceed 59.2 ± 2.3%.Conclusion. The diet of the adult population in Western Siberia was characterized by dysbalanced lipid consumption (more than 60% of the population). We documented an insufficient consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and phospholipids in combination with excessive consumption of products containing cholesterol, saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, and linoleic acid.

The association between n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid intakes and asthma in US children and adolescents: A cross-sectional study from NHANES.

Asthma is an inflammatory disease. The potential of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to alleviate asthma symptoms through their anti-inflammatory effects and immune modulation has been explored. However, the precise role of dietary n-3 PUFAs in childhood and adolescent asthma remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between dietary n-3 PUFAs intake and asthma in children and adolescents in the United States. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 8543 children and adolescents from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2013 and 2020 by adjusting for covariates and using multivariate logistic regression, restricted cubic spline, threshold effects, and subgroup analyses. Among 8354 participants, 1456 (16.5%) self-reported diagnosis of asthma by a healthcare provider. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, compared with individuals in the lowest n-3 PUFA consumption group (T1, <26.07 mg/kg/day), the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for asthma was 0.71 (95% CI: 0.6-0.84, p < .001) in the second group (T2, 26.07-48.93 mg/kg/day) and 0.58 (95% CI: 0.47-0.73, p < .001) in the third group (T3, >48.93 mg/kg/day). Furthermore, a nonlinear (L-shaped) relationship was observed between n-3 PUFA intake and asthma (p = .009), with subgroup and sensitivity analyses confirming the stability of the results. In the threshold analysis, a critical turning point was observed at approximately 59.0 mg/kg/day (OR = 0.984, 95% CI: 0.977-0.991, p < .001). Dietary intake of n-3 PUFAs exhibited an L-shaped relationship with asthma in children and adolescents in the United States, with a critical turning point observed at approximately 59.0 mg/kg/day.

Associations of polyunsaturated fatty acids with cardiovascular disease and mortality: a study of NHANES database in 2003–2018

BackgroundThis study was to explore the association between dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) consumption and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), all-cause mortality, and CVD-specific mortality.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study extracted demographic and clinical data of 38,838 adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database in 2003–2018. We explored the association between octadecadienoic acid (ODA), octadecatrienoic acid (ALA), octadecatetraenoic acid (ODTA), eicosatetraenoic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and different CVDs using weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The PUFAs were divided into four levels according to the quartiles (≤ Q1, Q1 to Q2, Q1 to Q2, > Q3). Weighted univariate and multivariate COX regression analyses with hazard ratio (HR) and 95% CI were used for exploring the association between PUFAs and all-cause mortality, CVD-specific mortality and other cause-specific mortality.ResultsDuring the follow-up, a total of 4,908 (9.12%) eligible participants died. The results showed that after adjusting for covariates, ODTA intake was related to low odds of coronary heart disease (CHD) [OR = 0.75, 95%CI: (0.64–0.88)]. Q1-Q2 quartile of ALA [OR = 0.81, 95%CI: (0.66–0.99)] and Q2-Q3 quartile of DPA [OR = 0.78, 95%CI: (0.62–0.99)] intakes were linked to low odds of heart attack, and > Q3 quartile of ODA intake was associated with low odds of congestive heart failure (CHF) [OR = 0.66, 95%CI: (0.49–0.90)] and stroke [OR = 0.65, 95%CI: (0.47–0.90)]. Q2-Q3 quartile of DPA intake was linked to low odds of angina [OR = 0.76, 95%CI: (0.58–0.99)]. Higher ALA intake was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality [Q2-Q3: HR = 0.86, 95%CI: (0.74–0.99); > Q3: HR = 0.76, 95%CI: (0.63–0.91)]. Additionally, Q2-Q3 quartile of ALA, Q1-Q2 quartile of AA and DPA intakes were respectively related to a low risk of CVD-specific mortality, while that > Q3 quartile of ALA related to that of mortality by other causes.ConclusionOur study found that PUFAs were associated with different CVDs, and higher ALA intake was related to lower risk of all-cause mortality. Ensuring adequate intake of PUFAs was beneficial to the health and may decrease the risk of mortality.

Neutrophil Membrane-Inspired Nanorobots Act as Antioxidants Ameliorate Ischemia Reperfusion-Induced Acute Kidney Injury.

Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury causes excessive oxidative events and initiates destructive inflammatory responses, and it is an important promoter to the pathology of various pathema states. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent type of nonapoptotic cell death accompanied by the accumulation of membrane lipid peroxide and consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acid, and it plays a key role in I/R injury diseases. Moreover, the excessive production of inflammatory cytokines contributes to the development of acute kidney injury. Here, we reported neutrophil membrane-coated copper-based nanoparticles (N-Cu5.4O@DFO NPs) for I/R kidney injury treatment. The highly biocompatible and stable N-Cu5.4O@DFO NPs showed excellent antioxidant and iron ion scavenging abilities in vitro. Our finding showed that the N-Cu5.4O@DFO NPs strategy could significantly accumulate in the inflammatory kidney, reduce oxidative damage events and inflammatory response, and finally achieve synergistic therapy against renal I/R injury. This work promotes the development of nanoantioxidant agents with multiple antioxidant properties for the therapy of other I/R injury diseases.

Dietary Fish and n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Consumption, and Renal Cell Carcinoma Risk in Japan: The Japan Public Health Center-Based Prospective Study.

Previous epidemiologic studies found inconsistent associations between fish consumption and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Although the consumption of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was reported to protect against the development of some types of cancer, little is known regarding its association with RCC. We investigated the association between fish and n-3 PUFA consumption and RCC risk using the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study. We examined data from 84,063 eligible Japanese participants aged 45 to 74 years who responded to a validated food frequency questionnaire for Cohort I in 1995 and Cohort II in 1998. The participants were followed-up until 2013. HRs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using a multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard model, and the exposure level was categorized into quartiles. Among the 1,272,298 person-years of follow-up, 262 cases of newly diagnosed RCC were identified. The multivariate-adjusted HRs for the highest vs. lowest quartile of fish, including shellfish, were (HR = 1.43; 95% CI, 0.98-2.07) and the individual marine n-3 PUFAs were (HR = 1.56; 95% CI, 1.07-2.28; Ptrend = 0.09) for eicosapentenoic acid, (HR = 1.81; 95% CI, 1.27-2.59; Ptrend = 0.01) for docosapentaenoic acid, and (HR = 1.56; 95% CI, 1.07-2.27; Ptrend = 0.09) for docosahexaenoic acid. RCC were further categorized on the basis of diagnosis methods and cancer stage, and the positive correlation did not change substantially. We demonstrated that high consumption of n-3 PUFA is associated with RCC risk. The positive association between n-3 PUFA and RCC risk was observed in Japanese who consume higher amounts of fish than Western populations.

Promising Effects of N-Docosahexaenoyl Ethanolamine in Breast Cancer: Molecular and Cellular Insights.

Unhealthy dietary habits have been identified as a risk factor for the development and progression of cancer. Therefore, adopting a healthy eating pattern is currently recommended to prevent the onset of different types of cancers, including breast carcinoma. In particular, the Mediterranean diet, based on high consumption of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (N-3 PUFAs), such as those found in cold-water fish and other seafood, nuts, and seeds, is recommended to reduce the incidence of several chronic-degenerative diseases. Indeed, the consumption of N-3 PUFAs, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), reduced the risk of different types of cancer, including breast cancer. Moreover, they can counteract breast cancer progression and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy in breast cancer survival. Studies have demonstrated that DHA, exhibiting greater antitumor activity than EPA in breast cancer, can be attributed to its direct impact on breast cancer cells and also due to its conversion into various metabolites. N-docosahexaenoyl ethanolamine, DHEA, is the most studied DHA derivative for its therapeutic potential in breast cancer. In this review, we emphasize the significance of dietary habits and the consumption of N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly DHA, and we describe the current knowledge on the antitumoral action of DHA and its derivative DHEA in the treatment of breast cancer.

Synergistic Effects of Combined Concurrent Training and Eri-Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation on Bone Mineral Density, Muscle Strength, and Inflammation.

Obesity has been associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD) and rapid muscle weakness. Regular exercise and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) consumption have been recognized as nonpharmaceutical approaches to increase BMD and ameliorate muscle weakness. This study aimed to determine the effects of concurrent training (CCT) and Eri-PUFA supplementation on BMD, muscular strength, and inflammation in obese adults. A total of 33 obese participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups (n=11 per group): (1) a placebo group; (2) an Eri-PUFA ingestion group (ERI); or (3) a CCT and Eri-PUFA ingestion group (CCT+ERI). The ERI and CCT+ERI groups received approximately 2.5 g of linolenic acid per day from Eri silkworm pupae. The exercise program included aerobic and resistance exercises performed under supervision three times per week for 8 weeks. Before and after the 8-week intervention, BMD, muscular strength, and inflammatory markers were measured. Only the CCT+ERI group showed a significant increase in lumbar spine BMD (5.1%, P<0.01) and upper-body muscle strength (16.9%, P<0.01) after the intervention, with differences between the groups. After the intervention, both the ERI and CCT+ERI groups showed a significant decrease in the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (-25%, P<0.01 and -21.4%, P<0.05, respectively) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (-21.6%, P<0.05 and -19.4%, P<0.05, respectively). These findings demonstrate that combining CCT and Eri-PUFA supplementation increases BMD and upper-body muscular strength and decreases inflammation. Although Eri-PUFA consumption did not affect BMD or muscle strength directly, it may have an additive effect on BMD by reducing inflammation.

Association between Arachidonic Acid and the Risk of Schizophrenia: A Cross-National Study and Mendelian Randomization Analysis.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially long-chain PUFAs (LCPUFAs), are crucial for both the structural and functional integrity of cells. PUFAs have been reported to be insufficient in schizophrenia, and the resulting cell membrane impairments have been hypothesized as an etiological mechanism. However, the impact of PUFA deficiencies on the onset of schizophrenia remain uncertain. We investigated the associations between PUFAs consumption and schizophrenia incidence rates through correlational analyses and conducted Mendelian randomization analyses to reveal the causal effects. Using dietary PUFA consumption and national schizophrenia incidence rates in 24 countries, we found that incidence rates of schizophrenia were inversely correlated with arachidonic acid (AA) and ω-6 LCPUFA consumption (rAA = -0.577, p < 0.01; rω-6 LCPUFA = -0.626, p < 0.001). Moreover, Mendelian randomization analyses revealed that genetically predicted AA and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) were protective factors against schizophrenia (ORAA = 0.986, ORGLA = 0.148). In addition, no significant relationships were observed between schizophrenia and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or other ω-3 PUFAs. These findings show that the deficiencies of ω-6 LCPUFAs, especially AA, are associated with schizophrenia risk, which sheds novel insight into the etiology of schizophrenia and a promising diet supplementation for the prevention and treatment of schizophrenia.

Palm Oil and Coconut Oil Saturated Fats: Properties, Food Applications, and Health

Fats and oils from plant sources are key components of a complete and healthful diet, as they supply essential fatty acids and liposoluble bioactive compounds. Many features and functions of dietary fats and oils have been studied extensively by the scientific community, with a focus on their impacts on human health. In this realm, an abundance of research has focused on the contribution of dietary fats and oils to the development of cardiovascular diseases, which is often attributed to their impact on the concentration of cholesterol in the blood. Such research has established that the degree of saturation plays a critical role in the impact of fats on cholesterol levels. Thus, consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids decreases serum and low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol levels, while saturated fatty acids have cholesterol-increasing effects. Coconut and oil palm are the most prevalent sources of plant-derived saturated fatty acids in the diet, and in recent years there has been much debate centered around their health impacts throughout the scientific community. Consumers are hungry for scientific, fact-based guidance from reputable sources, as perception of these fat sources varies greatly from decade-to-decade, year-to-year, and month-to-month. This review on plant-derived saturated fats aims to put forth the most current research and issues related to cultivation, manufacturing of oils and derivatives, food applications, as well as health benefits and concerns, to allow the scientific community and consumers to make informed decisions when selecting foods to include as part of a healthful diet.

Increased Intake of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Is Associated with Reduced Odds of Low Hand Grip Strength in Korean Adults

Nutritional status is thought to be one of the modifiable risk factors for muscle health. This study investigates the association between dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) intake and hand grip strength (HGS) in Korean adults. The cross-sectional analysis was performed on 18,278 participants aged ≥19 years enrolled in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2016-2019. Omega-3 PUFA consumption was positively linked to the dietary intake of nuts, fish, and shellfish in Korean adults. After adjusting for potential confounders, the results showed that increased omega-3 PUFA intake was associated with a decreased risk of low HGS (odds ratio (OR) for upper quartile (Q4) compared to Q1, men: OR = 1.42 (95% CI: 1.17-1.72), women: OR = 1.61 (1.37-1.89)). This inverse association was reported in people who did no resistance exercise or had an insufficient protein intake. In contrast, this association was not evident in adults who did resistance exercise or had sufficient protein intake. Furthermore, participants with hypertension or type 2 diabetes showed stronger associations between dietary omega-3 PUFA intake and HGS compared with other subgroups. These results suggest that dietary omega-3 PUFA intake positively related with HGS in Korean adults.

Ramadan fasting reduces high-sensitivity C-reactive protein among HIV-infected patients receiving antiretroviral therapy.

Inflammatory conditions and oxidative stress increase in HIV infection, and inflammation increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Ramadan fasting is known to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in diabetic patients. This study examined the effects of Ramadan fasting on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and total antioxidant status (TAOS) in HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART). This was a prospective cohort study comparing HIV-infected patients on stable ART who fasted throughout Ramadan to HIV-infected patients who did not fast during Ramadan. Inclusion criteria were men aged 20-40 years, taking first-line ART for at least 6 months, Muslims intent to fast for Ramadan, no current hospitalization because of acute conditions and not being treated for opportunistic infections. After 2 weeks, hs-CRP had decreased significantly in the fasting group (-0.41 mg/L [IQR = -1; 0.10]) compared to the non-fasting group (0.20 mg/L [IQR = -0.30; 1.50]) (p = 0.004). The linear regression analysis has shown that Ramadan fasting contributed to 10.10% of the variance in hs-CRP value (R 2 = 0.101) and decreased its value by 0.317 points (B = -0.317). Changes in TAOS did not significantly different (p = 0.405) between the fasting group (0.05 mmol/L [IQR = -0.03; 0.12]) and the non-fasting group (0.04 mmol/L [IQR = -0.13; 0.36]). In the fasting group, there were significant changes in polyunsaturated fatty acid consumption (p = 0.029), body weight (p = 0.001), cigarette smoking (p = 0.001), and sleeping duration (p = 0.001). Ramadan fasting reduces hs-CRP concentrations among HIV patients on ART.

Does Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Intake Associate With Bone Mineral Density and Limb Structural Changes in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory disease that can result in bone erosion, lean mass lowering, and increase of fat mass without changes in body weight. The dietary consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been assessed in many studies due to their potential anti-inflammatory effect. The aim of this research was to identify if dietary intake of PUFAs associates with bone mineral density (BMD) and limb structural changes in early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA) compared to a population-based control group. The study was conducted because previous results have been insufficient. The study group consisted of 83 ERA patients and 321 control subjects. A dual-energy X-Ray absorptiometry (DXA) machine was used to measure hip, lumbar spine, and radius BMD, as well as arm and leg fat, lean, and bone mass. Dietary habits and inflammatory markers were assessed to evaluate the effects to BMD and limb structural changes. In ERA subjects, higher dietary consumption of PUFAs was associated with a decrease in arm fat mass (b -28.17, P = .02) and possibly with higher lumbar BMD (b 0.008, P = .058). Limb bone and lean mass changes were not associated with dietary intake of PUFAs. Balanced nutrition is essential. Consuming PUFAs could be beneficial in ERA preventing structural changes to hands, but additional research is needed.

[The importance of nutrition in the prevention of endometriosis: systematic review].

endometriosis is a hormone-dependent disorder characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue in extrauterine sites, which can trigger a chronic inflammatory reaction. This disease mainly affects women of childbearing age and can have a negative impact on their physical, mental and social well-being. There are eating patterns considered as anti-inflammatory, such as the Mediterranean diet, which could help in the prevention and treatment of endometriosis. The objective of this review was to know the relationship between the consumption of different food groups and the prevention of endometriosis. a systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA methodology. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases were consulted. Studies published between 2013 and 2023 were selected, accessible in full text, written in English and Spanish and including a sample of women with endometriosis and/or healthy women, in addition to evaluating the relationship between diet and endometriosis. Unrelated articles, systematic reviews or meta-analyses, pilot studies and studies conducted in animals were excluded. a total of ten studies were included. The consumption of fruits, vegetables (not cruciferous), dairy products, fish, potatoes, legumes, vitamins (A, C, D and B12), monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids and minerals (calcium, potassium and magnesium) seems to reduce the risk of endometriosis. further studies investigating the relationship between consumption of different food groups and risk of endometriosis are needed.
